Haiti: Chair of Nursing and Midwifery

The chair of the Center for Nursing and Midwifery will provide leadership and oversee the successful implementation of a new academic curriculum in nursing and midwifery that offers world-class education. In consultation with Rwandan nursing leadership, s/he will determine the appropriate role for UGHE in advancing nursing academics. S/he will be responsible to create the short term and long-term vision and strategy to guide nursing within the university, develop relevant curriculums for vetted programs and degrees, and assemble the relevant required full time and visiting faculty. The chair is also responsible for building and managing relationships with other national and global academic institutions and represent UGHE at local, regional and international levels.

Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Develop the vision and strategic plan for nursing and midwifery at UGHE in collaboration with Rwandan nursing leadership and UGHE leadership
  • Manage and oversee strategic plan program deliverables to ensure milestones are met
  • Recruit, manage, and mentor a growing team for the Center for Nursing and Midwifery
  • Oversee development of new innovative learning platforms and modalities for the center of nursing and midwifery (i.e. online blended version, competency based inter professional learning)
  • Collaborate with other leaders of UGHE to develop guidelines and policies specific to the program
  • Collaborate with other directors at UGHE to sustain an interdisciplinary relationship and approach to education embedded through out UGHE
  • Oversee continuous monitoring, evaluation, and quality for the Center for Nursing and Midwifery

  • Financial Oversight*

  • Develop and manage annual budgets for effective and sustainable functioning of the department.

  • Ensure that program efforts, deliverables, and finances are well-managed and regularly reviewed

  • Support fundraising efforts to ensure sustainability

Partnership

  • Build and sustain partnerships with academic institutions, professional institutions, clinical teaching sites, nursing and midwifery councils, and other organizations

  • Negotiate with clinical partners for students’ clinical placements sites

  • Represent UGHE and the unit in the community, local, regional and international conferences and summits.

Academic

  • Oversee the drafting, development, implementation, and quality of a relevant nursing and midwifery curriculum
  • Collaborate with other departments and degrees at UGHE to support inter-professional curriculum across academic programs including medical education and the masters of global health delivery
  • Lead the recruitment of the center’s full-time and part-time faculty
  • Oversee students’ admission process in collaboration with the recruitment and admissions office.
  • Supervise the nursing and midwifery faculty in accordance with the regulations that govern academic faculty.
  • Serve as a teacher and mentor to nursing and midwifery, MGHD (Global Health Delivery) and MBBS (MD) students
  • Participate in the teaching and learning programs across the different academic programs at UGHE such as Executive education, MGHD (Global Health Delivery), MBBS (MD) and others
  • Conduct academic research and quality improvement activities in collaboration with faculty members and members of UGHE

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or PhD (preferred) in Nursing or Midwifery; additional qualification in health sciences education preferred.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in leadership roles, developing strategy and vision for organizations or programs
  • Experience in curriculum development and innovative teaching methods, such as team-based learning and problem-based learning, blended learning, formative assessment, peer instruction, or online learning.
  • Experience in developing and implementing curricula in higher education settings.
  • Track-record of publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and experience working in an interdisciplinary and multicultural environment.
  • Experience with new and rapidly-growing organizations, initiatives, or departments, with an entrepreneurial spirit and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English required.
  • Experience working in Rwanda is of additional value
  • French or Kinyarwanda language skills optional.

UGHE faculty will be based at our campus in Butaro, Northern Rwanda. The campus is situated in a scenic area with a mild climate year-round. New, on-campus housing is available for full-time faculty. Faculty moving to UGHE from outside of Rwanda for this position will receive a relocation allotment and an annual stipend for travel to their home countries for themselves and eligible dependents.
