News That Moves (newsthatmoves.org) is a Humanitarian Information Service, designed to provide “news you can use” for refugees all across the Balkan refugee trail starting from where they enter Europe to their final destination. It aims at providing a comprehensive and coordinatedinformation-basedresponse to the crisis. The project aims to increase the quantity, reach & impact of life-saving humanitarian information to through online mobile media channels.
The Humanitarian News Managing Editor will be responsible to manage a production team, both on site and remotely, including full time-staff as well as freelancers, and establish and maintain contacts with the humanitarian sector, volunteering organizations, media and government either directly or through staff across the whole refugee-trail. He or she will also ensure the operational and editorial management of an information system that allows to gather, select, edit, document and publish information related to refugees, both qualitative as quantitative, and will be responsible to feed it in a consistent and continuous way to the affected population via all relevant platforms, including our own newsthatmoves.org, social media platforms accessed by refugees and volunteers, and into the humanitarian system.
The Managing Editor should have strong operational and people’s management skills, have relevant background in media and communication and be familiar with the humanitarian system.
The Humanitarian News Managing Editor’s tasks include:
- Lead a team of full-time staff and freelancers;
- Establish and maintain contacts with all relevant partners;
- Ensure timely financial and narrative reporting to the Project Director, Internews HQ and its donors;
- Liaise with staff of partner organizations to ensure optimal data sharing;
- Support the development and facilitate implementation of mechanisms to help generate more and more relevant feedback;
- Ensure a continuous, qualitative, and consistent information flow in a format that is relevant for the refugee population, volunteers across the region, and the humanitarian partners in all relevant languages;
- Present the generated feedback at relevant forums, coordination meetings or with partner organizations;
- Lead and support reporting of ongoing activities to the Internews M&E Officer;
- Perform any other duties as assigned by the Project Director.
Qualifications:
- Good organizational skills, including time-management
- Experience in media and news research, production, and dissemination, including online environments
- Strong people’s management skills, both in a hierarchical position as non-hierarchical (when trying to get things done with partner organizations)
- Strong computer skills to manage information (Data management software, excel – and other data-processing software)
- A good understanding of humanitarian information and how to turn it into “news you can use”
- Self-motivated and able to work in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to work in a team and independently
- Strong understanding of, and commitment towards editorial values of the project.
